Ice Cream & Opera ~ Children’s Opera Learning Adventure

Ice Cream & Opera, on Sunday matinees of Livermore Valley Opera productions, is a perfect way to introduce young people to opera – in a way that makes it fun, interactive, and even includes ice cream.

What Happens at Ice Cream & Opera?

  1. Before the performance, children and families are given a special student copy of “Curtain Call,” a simple introduction for young people who are just starting out in opera.
  2. At Intermission, complimentary ice cream is served to everyone.
  3. Right after the final curtain goes down, the children gather for a special guided tour that begins at the orchestra pit. The orchestra plays the overture of the opera, and now the children can see as well as hear the themes, and meet the musicians and see what it feels like from their point of view. Orchestra sections (woodwinds, brass, strings, etc.) are identified. Children have an opportunity to ask questions, and those children who play an instrument find their musical counterparts in the orchestra.
  4. The children meet the Stage Manager, and two groups of 20 children are formed; the Guided Tour takes two routes, each travelling onstage and behind the curtain for a true behind-the-scenes look at lights, sets, and how production magic happens.
  5. The tour includes a special opportunity to meet some of the opera's cast, and take a bow onstage in the lights to experience what a performing artist feels on a professional stage.
