T.J. Gilmartin has a PhD in Engineering and MS in Physics. He is retired from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he worked in the development of laser systems for national defense and energy programs. T.J. has been an active Rotarian for 20 years, a past president of the Livermore Rotary, and has focused his retirement efforts on science education (TOPScience), scholarships and loans (SELF), and international youth and adult cultural exchange programs.

T.J. first became interested in opera through listening with his grandfather to the Saturday broadcasts of Texaco Opera from the Met and to his parent’s 78 rpm recordings of operettas such as Student Prince.

T.J. Gilmartin and his wife, Barbara, frequently  travel; they enjoyed a ballet interpretation of Die Fledermaus  in Vienna just prior to hearing the Livermore Valley Opera’s 18th Season production here. T.J. says, “I’ve watched the Livermore Valley Opera grow from the high school theater and local voices to lavish stage settings and singers from around the nation wanting to appear in our productions.  Although you can still pick out your neighbors in the chorus and extras,  LVO is an amazing and professional musical resource, widely known, but living here in Livermore. I love being able to attend the pre-opera talk and then just sit back and listen to world class music right here in our own community.”
